Volkswagen Ameo Start of Production

Volkswagen is present in the Indian automotive industry for almost a decade now. However, the manufacturer had not introduced a single product in the sub-four-metre sedan segment. After the Polo, the Vento has been VW's option for a sedan. This, however, has recently changed as the German auto giant promised to introduce a compact sedan. And as a prelude to the 2016 Auto Expo, the Ameo was unveiled. Today, it is a matter of great pride for the car maker as the first Ameo, which is a 1.2-litre petrol engine one, has rolled out of their Chakan facility in Maharashtra.

Present at the occasion, Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited, said, "This day marks an important event in the journey of Volkswagen in India. The Ameo symbolises yet another first as it has specifically been created for the Indian customers. Due to the expected high demand for the Ameo, we have recently added a third shift to support extra production volumes at our plant. We are committed to ensuring that our customers get their Ameo as soon as possible."

Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis who facilitated the event with his presence, added, "Volkswagen India adds yet another feather in its cap as the all-new made-for-India and made-in-India Ameo is rolled out today. It is not only a matter of pride for Volkswagen but for all of Maharashtra and I would like to share my heartiest congratulations with the company. The roll-out means a lot to us as it explains to the world what 'Make In India' actually means. Be it in the area of skill development among the youth, employment generations or Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan to make Maharashtra drought-free by 2019, Volkswagen is playing an active role in all aspects and I am thankful for this." Currently, the production capacity of the car maker is 500 units per day and the company has planned for 150 Ameos out of it. Prices of the compact sedan will be announced by mid-2016.

The Ameo will not only fill the gap between the Polo and the Vento but introduce some segment first features as well. Those are cruise control, rain sensing automatic wipers, anti-pinch power windows with one-touch operation on all four and a rather interesting remote window open and close function - a must have for Indian summers. In the safety department, VW will provide ABS and dual front airbags standard across all trim levels namely Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. Electronic Stability Program and Hill Hold control will be a part of the DSG-equipped diesel-powered models.

Talking about the engines, the Ameo will be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines seen in the Polo. Although the company has not revealed the power and torque figures for the compact sedan, it is expected to have similar numbers to the hatchback. While both the engines will be mated to a five-speed manual, the oil-burner will have an option of a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox as well. This will be a brilliant combination in the compact sedan segment, but would have a slight premium attached to it.

Recently, the car maker introduced the Ameo mobile application that is available on Google PlayStore (and would make it to Apple AppStore soon) for prospects to experience the car, its features etc. on their smartphones. Read: Volkswagen Launches Mobile App for Ameo
