The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the one car that comes to mind whenever someone talks about hot hatches. This iconic car is turning 40 this year, and the company is celebrating it by introducing the most powerful production Golf ever- the Golf GTI Clubsport S.

It will be powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that pumps out 310PS of power and 380Nm of torque between the range of 1,700 to 5,300rpm. The engine is borrowed from the 330PS Golf GTI TCR race car that competes in the TCR International Series. Even though the Golf R comes equipped with an all-wheel drive system, the Clubsport S retains the front wheel drive setup. It will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential to keep the torque steer under control.

The VW Golf GTI Clubsport S has undergone serious weight loss programme, and now just weighs 2,833 lbs. This was achieved by shedding the rear bench, floor mats, parcel shelf, and most of the sound deadening material. Moreover, several components including brake covers and front sub-frame are now made out of aluminium, and the battery is smaller in size. The lightweight construction means that the powerful engine can pull the GTI Clubsport S from 0 to 100kmph in just 5.8 seconds, and help it to reach a top speed of 261kmph.

To make this a potent track weapon, several updates were added under its skin. This includes special brake pads, Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres, adjustable suspension, and a sport-tuned chassis. From the outside, the Clubsport S looks identical to the Clubsport model. However, step inside and you will notice some special elements like Alcantara-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel and a numbered plaque on the centre console.

Following the trend of manufacturers trying to break Nurburgring lap records with their production cars, Volkswagen also took the Clubsport S to the racetrack where the hot-hatch was able to set a new lap record of 7:49.21, breaking the 7:50.63 timing of Honda Civic Type R prototype. Since this is a special car, the production number of the Golf GTI Clubsport S will be limited to 400 units worldwide.
