Hyundai Motor India recently launched the Venue compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) at an entry-level ex-showroom price of ₹6.5 lakh. The car’s diesel version is hauled by a 1.4-litre unit which is BS-IV compliant. The BS-VI emission standard will be implemented from 1 April and most carmakers are preparing to roll out cars adhering to the new norms.

Hyundai has already announced that unlike Maruti Suzuki, they will continue to sell diesel cars in the BS-VI era. Kia Motors, owned by the Hyundai Motor Company of South Korea, commenced its India operations on 22 August by launching the Seltos midsized SUV. The latter is powered by both diesel and petrol engines. The 1.5-litre diesel motor of the Kia Seltos is already BS-VI compliant. Hyundai, according to industry reports, will borrow that engine to develop the BS-VI compliant diesel Venue.

The 1.5-litre diesel unit in the Seltos produces 250Nm peak torque at 1,500-2,750rpm and 115PS maximum power at 4,000rpm. It returns a mileage of 20.8kmpl as certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The engine, however, is likely to be slightly detuned before it is fitted in the Venue. The current 1.4-litre diesel motor of the Hyundai Venue outputs 220Nm peak torque and 90PS maximum power at 4,000rpm and is paired with a 6-speeed manual transmission system. It has an ARAI mileage of 23.7kmpl. It’s not yet clear whether Hyundai will offer an automatic transmission with this engine like Kia in the Seltos.

Besides the Venue, the new 1.5-litre diesel motor will replace the 1.6-litre and 1.4-litre units in other Hyundai cars like the Verna, Creta, and Elantra. The exact powertrain will depend on the specific model.

The entry-level Hyundai Venue BS-IV diesel is currently pegged at an ex-showroom price of ₹7.75 lakh. The BS-VI version is expected to command a premium over the existing price. The 1.4-litre diesel Venue is expected to be launched early next year.
