Toyota To Launch 2016 Fortuner In India Soon

  • Sep 15, 2016
Having faced a huge setback in India in 2016 pertaining to the Delhi-NCR diesel-ban, Toyota seems to have finally made its mind to launch the 2016 Fortuner here. Toyota dealerships in New Delhi have confirmed that the new Fortuner will go on sale around Oct-Nov 2016.

The new Fortuner was globally unveiled last year and launched in Indonesia earlier this year. Based on the new TNGA platform, the 7-seater Fortuner shares underpinnings with the Toyota Hilux pick-up. The new Fortuner is bigger than the current model on sale in India, being 90mm longer and 15mm wider.

In India, the new Fortuner is expected to be powered by the same set of diesel engines that power the new Innova Crysta. The 2.4-litre diesel engine in the Innova makes 148PS max power and the 2.8-litre diesel engine produces 177PS. Toyota is expected to offer both manual and automatic transmission options on the new Fortuner.

In view of the recent diesel-ban (over 2,000cc) in Delhi-NCR and considering uncertain policy changes, Toyota might as well plan to offer a petrol engine in the new Fortuner, like the Innova Crysta. Unlike Innova, the previous-gen of which did get a petrol engine, Fortuner was never powered by a petrol engine in India.

Since Fortuner has received a generation change, it now looks completely different inside-out. Toyota has incorporated its 'Keen Look' theme on the second-gen Fortuner that now gets a sharper headlamp and tail light design. Those who find the current Fortuner's interiors too utilitarian will be happy to know that the interiors have been reworked and the Fortuner now looks modern and premium on the inside.

The 2016 Fortuner will primarily compete against Ford Endeavour in India which is available between Rs 25-30 lakh ex-showroom Delhi and is powered by 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre diesel engines.

Currently, Toyota Fortuner is priced between Rs 25-28 lakh ex-showroom Delhi and there are no prizes for guessing that the new Fortuner will see a price hike. Fortuner has always been priced at a premium over Ford Endeavour in India and has still managed to draw buyers. However, the new Endeavour has taken the game in this segment to the next level and is still priced in the current Fortuner's price range. It'll therefore be interesting to see how Toyota prices the new Fortuner in India.
