Indians love crossovers and the car makers very well know it. While manufacturers who are fortunate enough to have a crossover SUV in their lineup are busy counting their money, others resort to make shift arrangements in order to plug the void. Slightly raised hatchbacks sporting what they call it as rough road package seem to be the next best thing to a full fledged crossover, at least according to the automakers.

The Skoda Fabia Scout was the first pseudo-crossover to enter India but it never caught the buyers' fancy. The VW Cross Polo looks promising but it's a bit too early to gauge its performance. The Toyota Etios Cross seems to be the next entrant in the segment!

Here is the Brazilian TVC of the Etios Cross:

Indianautosblog.com's reader Sanket Bansod has spotted an uncamouflaged example of the Etios Cross which was being filmed for a promotional video at Magarpatta City in Pune. This suggests that the car's launch is imminent and the upcoming Auto Expo is most likely to be used as the launch pad.

The Toyota Etios Cross went on sale in Brazil and Argentina last year. Compared to the regular Etios Liva hatchback, the Cross gets a significantly different front fascia which consists of a new silver accented front grill, silver scuff plate and bigger foglamps. Other elements which are aimed at lending the Etios Cross a rugged appeal are black plastic claddings in the front, sides and rear, silver roof rails, new alloy wheels and Etios Cross badges.

On the inside, the dashboard would remain pretty much the same save for chrome highlighting for AC vents and Etios Cross branded seat covers. We don't expect anything to change under the skin.

Like the VW Cross Polo, the Etios Cross is also expected to be offered only in the top-of-the-line diesel variant. In Brazil, the premium commanded by the Cross variant over the regular hatchback is equivalent to Rs. 80,000.

The bland design is one of the biggest disadvantages of the Etios twins and Toyota Kiroloskar Motor would be hoping that the appearance of the Etios Cross would appeal to more people.
