California based electric car company Tesla has introduced a new entry-level four wheel drive variant of the Model S. Dubbed the S 70D the new model replaces  the rear-wheel drive S 60 model at the bottom of the Model S range.

Improvements on the new S 70D include a more powerful battery pack (70kWh vs. 60kWh); four-wheel drivetrain with one electric motor in the front and one at rear; increased range - 386km over the S 60’s 334km; and improved performance- 0-100km/h now comes in 5.2 seconds as opposed to the outgoing car’s 5.9 seconds. The top speed is 225km/h.

Power output on the new Tesla four-door four-wheel drive S 70D is rated at 329PS. In comparison, the Model S range tops out with the P 85D version that uses an 85kWh battery pack and delivers an astonishing 691PS of maximum power output along with peak-torque of 931Nm to all four-wheels. Thanks to its bigger battery pack, the Tesla S P 85D sedan will do a 0-100km/h dash in a supercar-rivaling 3.2 seconds. It also has a higher range of 480km, while the top speed is also 250km/h.

Additionally, the new Model S 70D comes with Tesla’s Autopilot software as standard. The system works based on inputs received using a series of cameras and sensors to steer, accelerate and brake the car on highways without requiring the driver’s physical inputs. It is also capable of reading and automatically obeying road signals. Among other standard fitments, the Model S includes sat-nav, free access to Tesla’s ‘Supercharger network’, parking sensors and auto braking.

With the launch of the new variant, Tesla now sells four versions of the Model S in total. Namely, they are 70D, 85, 85D and P 85D. The numerals on the names show whether a car has a 70-kWh or 85-kWh battery pack. Prices for the S 70D start at $75,000 (Rs 46.75 lakh; excluding duties and electric car incentives) while the top-of-the-line P85D, costs north of $120,000 (Rs 74.80 lakh).

Tesla has also included three new colours- Ocean Blue, Obsidian Black and Warm Silver across the entire Model S range. Bookings for the S 70D are open with deliveries commencing by June 2015.
