Tata Harrier, the recently launched compact sports utility vehicle (SUV), is likely to get a more powerful BS-VI compliant engine soon. FCA India has been reportedly testing the 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine on the Jeep Compass to comply with the BS-VI emission norms. The engine will debut in the Compass Trailhawk SUV, which is set to launch in July next year. Once the engine passes the emission test, it will be fitted on to other cars, including the Tata Harrier.

A heavily camouflaged Harrier was recently spotted being tested alongside a Jeep Compass hinting towards the development.

The specifications of the four-cylinder, 2.0-litre motor of the Compass will remain unchanged. The engine is expected to retain its 173PS maximum power and 359Nm peak torque output. It will be mated to a 9-speed, ZF-sourced, automatic gear system in the Compass Trailhawk. The same engine will be found in the Tata Harrier. The Harrier now produces 140PS maximum power. The 2.0-litre motor will produce 30PS more power while retaining the 350Nm peak torque output.

The 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine will also haul the Morris Garages (MG) Hector and is expected to meet the BS-VI emission norms later this year. The BS-VI compliance will lead to a price hike of all the three SUVs. The Tata Harrier and Jeep Compass (diesel) are currently available at an ex-showroom price of ₹12.69-16.25 lakh and ₹16.16-23.11 lakh respectively.

The Tata Harrier is expected to get a 6-speed, Hyundai-sourced, torque converter automatic gear system with the 2.0-litre diesel motor in mid-2019. The petrol-powered Harrier, on the other hand, is unlikely to debut before 2020. Tata is also expected to introduce a direct injection, 1.6-litre petrol engine in the Harrier in both manual and automatic dual clutch transmission (DCT) options in the future. The Mumbai-headquartered company, however, is unlikely to introduce a BS-VI diesel engine in the Tigor and Tiago.
