Tata Motors is all set to bring in the new year with it’s new Bolt hatchback. It has now been confirmed that the company will be launching the Bolt on the 22nd of January, 2015.

Designed to appeal more to the youth, the Bolt features bold and sharp design cues that do make it look rather contemporary. It’s the same story as Tata has worked on giving a unique layout to the dashboard which steps away from the more traditional Tata interior design language. Although, the car is not 'all-new' in the complete sense of the term as the platform is shared with the Tata Vista hatchback and Manza sedan.

Those with a more keen eye will observe that the new Tata Bolt is a hatchback version of the new Zest compact sedan that was launched by Tata motors a few months back in 2014. And like the Bolt, the Zest too is designed to appeal to a young car buying audience.

In terms of powertrain, the Bolt and Zest are powered by the famed 1.3 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged MultiJet diesel engine, which also does duty in the Tata Vista and Manza. The petrol engine on offer is the new 1.2 litre Revotron turbocharged petrol motors. Both engines are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox while an AMT unit is also on the cards. It’s also worth mentioning that an AMT equipped version of the Zest diesel (identical powertrain as that of the Bolt diesel) is already on sale.

The petrol fueled Tata Bolt’s engine develops 90PS of max power @ 5,000 rpm and 140Nm of peak torque between Rs. 1,500 rpm and 4,000 rpm. The Bolt’s diesel engine develops 75PS of peak power @ 5,000 rpm and 190Nm of peak torque between 1,750 rpm and 3,000 rpm. As mentioned earlier, both engine will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The petrol engine comes with three drive modes, namely, Eco, Sport and City.

Judging by the launch of the Zest, the Bolt is likely to be made available in a choice of four variants each for diesel and petrol models, with prices ranging between Rs. 4.25 lakh to Rs. 6.50 lakh (ex-showroom) when it is launched.
