  • Apr 03, 2019

Skoda’s new mid-size SUV, the Karoq and prime rival to the Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass will be launched in India in 2020. Earlier expected to come in 2019, it seems that the launch has been postponed. The mid-size SUV from Skoda is positioned between the Kamiq and the Kodiaq globally. It made its global debut in Sweden in May 2017.

Based on the VW MQB platform, the Karoq appears to be in line with the Kodiaq as far as styling is concerned. Apart from the Karoq, models like Kodiaq, Tiguan, and Octavia are also based on the MQB platform. On the features front, the Karoq gets a large infotainment system with touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and an advanced sound system. Additionally, it gets ‘VarioFlex’ rear seats like the Yeti, though as an option. It allows extending the boot space from 479-litres to 588-litres by sliding the seats back and forth. The complete removal of seats, alternatively, can ma ke way for 1810-litre storage.

Globally, the Karoq is available in six variants, 1.0-litre, 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engines and 1.6-litre, 2.0-litre TDI with two tune states diesel engines. In India, it could come with the new 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine, which produces 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque and the 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. Transmission-wise, expect it to come with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG. An AWD variant could possibly be on cards. Since the Karoq will be launched in 2020, it will get the BSVI-compliant engines only.

Like other MQB models in the country, the Karoq will also be assembled in India. Expected to be priced above Rs 20 lakh, it is likely that the automaker will launch it around 2020 Auto Expo.
