Skoda Karoq SUV India Launch Likely In June 2020

  • Jun 03, 2019

The Skoda Karoq is likely to join the Czech carmaker’s India portfolio in June 2020. The Karoq mid-sized sports utility vehicle (SUV) was globally launched in the second half of 2017 and replaced the Skoda Yeti. It is positioned below the Kodiaq and will be brought to India via the completely built up (CBU) route. The SUV segment, both subcompact and midsized, is among the fastest growing in the Indian automobile market.

The Karoq is 4,382mm long, 1,626mm tall, and 1,841mm wide. Its wheelbase is 2,630mm for the all-wheel drive and 2,638mm for the front-wheel drive. The cabin is spacious enough to accommodate five adult passengers, while the boot offers 521 litres of cargo space. With the rear seats folded down, the boot can hold up to 1,630 litres of cargo. Skoda offers the Karoq SUV in 2.0-litre, 1.5-litre, and 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines and 2.0-litre, and 1.6-litre diesel motors in the international market. The car is available in a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) system.

Skoda is likely to roll out the 2.0-litre diesel powered Karoq in India. It’s the same motor that hauls the Skoda Kodiaq. The engine produces 148bhp and 340Nm peak torque and is mated to a 7-speed DSG system. Skoda reportedly plans to localise the production of the 1.0-litre turbocharged stratified injection (TSI) petrol motor in India for its upcoming compact SUV. Development of this engine is part of Sokda’s India 2.0 plan. The company, however, is unlikely to offer that engine in the Karoq.

With the introduction of the Karoq in India, Skoda targets to lock horns with other cars in the midsized SUV segment, particularly the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, and the Honda CR-V. The Karoq is expected to command an ex-showroom price of around ₹20-25 lakh. The vehicle is likely to debut in the 2020 New Delhi Auto Expo along with the India-specific Skoda Kamiq.
