Skoda Kamiq Spotted In India, 2021 Launch Likely

  • Nov 08, 2019

Skoda Kamiq, the compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) from the leading Czech carmaker, has been spotted in India. The car debuted globally at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The Kamiq is expected to be introduced in India by 2021 and will lock horns with the Kia Seltos and the second-generation Hyundai Creta.

The Kamiq is the smallest SUV from the Mlada Boleslav-headquartered company. It’s underpinned by Volkswagen’s MQB platform. Both companies are jointly engaged in localising the platform as part of its growth strategy for the Indian market.

The Kamiq, seen in the leaked images, appears to be the Europe-specific model. It has signature Skoda design elements that include the butterfly grill flanked by split headlamp units and LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The Skoda insignia is embossed on the boot lid. The India-specific model could be a bit different in aesthetics.

The Skoda Kamiq’s instrument cluster is expected to have analogue dials instead of the virtual cockpit system. The dashboard is dominated by an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. The car also gets a climate control system. The test vehicle spotted seems to have a blacked-out roof with rails. The car’s global model may come with either a fixed glass roof or a panoramic sunroof.

The Kamiq is offered with several engine options in the international market. The petrol options include turbocharged 1.5-litre and 1.0-litre units. The car is also available with a 1.6-litre diesel engine. Skoda recently added a turbocharged 1.0-litre hybrid compressed natural gas (CNG) unit to the petrol motor as well. The India-specific version of the car is expected to have smaller turbocharged motors. A factory-fitted CNG unit could be offered as an option.

Both the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta are bigger than the Skoda Kamiq in height and length. But the Kamiq’s wheelbase is larger than the two cars. The India-specific Kamiq is expected to be pegged between ₹10 lakh to ₹17 lakh (ex-showroom).
