Leading French carmaker Renault is reportedly in the final stages of testing the upgraded Kwid compact hatchback and the car is likely to be launched next month. The Kwid facelift has already been spotted during its test runs and a number of its exterior styling elements may resemble the Kwid KZE electric car. The latter was showcased at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition earlier this year.

The upgraded Kwid will get new design elements like the split headlight with LED daytime running (DRLs) placed near the grille. The main headlight unit will be positioned lower down on the bumper. The car will have new rear and front bumpers, and LED inserts on the taillight units. The India-specific Kwid, however, will continue to have three-lug nuts on its wheels instead of the four-unit setup on the car’s international version.

Major changes are likely to be incorporated in the car’s interior. It will share the fully digital instrument console with the upcoming Triber multipurpose vehicle (MPV). The dashboard design is expected to be tweaked. The Indian version of the upgraded Kwid will get a tachometer, redesigned air-conditioning vents, and the same steering wheel as in the Triber. The Kwid will have an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.

The upgraded Kwid is expected to retain the 799cc and 999cc engines from the car’s existing version. The former produces 53.3bhp at 5,678rpm and 72Nm peak torque at 4,386rpm. The 999cc motor outputs 67bhp at 5,500rpm and 91Nm peak torque at 4,250rpm. Both engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual gear system with a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) coming as an option. Both motors are expected to be BS-IV compliant at the time of launch. The upgraded BS-VI motor will be introduced later.

The Renault Kwid facelift will face competition from the Datsun GO and Maruti Suzuki Alto. It will also lock horns with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki budget hatchback S-Presso.
