A BS-VI compliant Renault Duster has been spotted being tested on the old Mumbai-Pune highway and the test vehicle looks identical to the facelift model introduced in July. The car spotted had its front wrapped in camouflage.

The leading French carmaker has already confirmed that it won’t sell any diesel cars in the BS-VI era which begins from April 1. The current India-specific Duster compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) is available with a 1,498cc petrol and 1,461cc diesel motor. The latter also hauls the Lodgy and Captur.

The second-generation Europe-specific Duster, which was not launched in India, is hauled by new turbocharged 1.3-litre and 1.0-litre petrol motors. Both these engines comply with the Euro 6.2 emission standard which is stricter than the upcoming BS-VI norm. The 1.0-litre engine produces 100PS maximum power and 160Nm peak torque. The 1.3-litre motor, on the other hand, comes in two states of tuning. It’s available in 130PS/240Nm and 150PS/250Nm output combinations.

Renault is yet to confirm which BS-VI petrol motor for the Duster will be launched in India. The 1.5-litre petrol motor in the current version may be replaced by the 1.0-litre unit. The 1.3-litre petrol engine, on the other hand, is likely to replace the existing diesel motor. Renault may update the current Duster’s existing petrol motor to the BS-VI standard and additionally introduce the turbocharged Europe-specific 1.3-litre unit in India.

The Duster has been one of the most popular SUVs in the Indian compact SUV segment, besides being a bestseller for Renault. The car’s existing version is priced between ₹7.99 lakh to ₹12.49 lakh. The BS-VI Duster is expected to command a premium of around ₹30,000 if the existing petrol engine is upgraded to meet the BS-VI norm. All other features are expected to be retained from the current model. The BS-VI Renault Duster may be introduced in February.
