Revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month in the UK, the Range Rover Sport SVR has officially gone on to become the fastest production SUV to go around the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany. The new Sport SVR lapped the 20.8 kilometers long Nordschleife circuit in 8 minutes and 14 seconds; putting it ahead of key rivals such as the Porsche Cayenne Turbo’s lap time of 8:17 minutes and BMW X5 M’s unofficially set lap time of 8:24 minutes.

By claiming this title, the Range Rover Sport SVR has not only beaten its high-riding competitors black and blue, but in the course of lapping the infamous circuit it also put some sports-sedans and hatchbacks of recent times to shame. Its clocked time of 8:14 minutes is a full second quicker than the BMW 1 Series M's lap time of 8:15 minutes (set in 2011; now discontinued), and is just one second off the Mercedes C63 AMG’s 8:13 set in 2009. It is also not too far behind from cars such as the Alfa Romeo 4C (8:04) and previous FWD-record holder, Renault Meganne RS265 (8:08).

To get a sub-2 tonne SUV around the Nurburgring in a sportscar rivaling time requires some intense thoughts and special measures. For the same reason, the Sport SVR has been developed by Jaguar-Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations unit- a JLR group branch that specializes in making bespoke and customized performance projects. The Spec-Ops JLR team has fitted the company’s most potent 5.0 litre supercharged V8 engine in the Sport SVR. This engine develops 550PS of power along with 680Nm of torque, and it can be found in Jaguar’s F-Type R sports car as well!

Since the Range Rover Sport SVR was developed and honed around the Nurburgring racetrack from the beginning, it helped the engineers tweak the handling characteristics of the the Sport SVR for the demanding Nordschleife circuit.

Explaining about the Sport SVR project further, JLR’s chief engineer for vehicle integrity Mike Cross, said, “The Nurburgring is a benchmark for vehicle development and testing, and cars become stronger, more durable and faster over its 20.8 kilometers and 70-plus corners. We wanted to see whether an SUV could behave like a performance car in this challenging environment. The results are spectacular and the Range Rover Sport SVR has demonstrated outstanding on-road performance capabilities.”

The Range Rover Sport SVR will be available for sale in major global markets from 2015 onwards. In India, the Range Rover Sport is being currently offered in both diesel and petrol variants. The Range Rover Sport is priced between Rs. 1.10 crore to Rs. 1.66 crore in India.
