Porsche has an enviable SUV range in India; it consists of the veteran, the Cayenne, and the new kid on the block, the Macan. Why is this range enviable? Because it commands a level of respect and popularity in the country that none of the other luxury brands has been able to emulate.

The Jaguar-Land Rover group has been trying hard to dominate the luxury SUV space in the Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1 Crore bracket, and the Jaguar F-Pace may be able to do just that.

Porsche has recognised this threat and decided to launch the Macan R4, which will be the most affordable variant of the compact-SUV on sale in the country while also being the most affordable Porsche vehicle you can own in the country.

The Porsche Macan R4 is more or less the same SUV that was launched in July 2014. The difference is that is powered by a smaller petrol engine and is priced well below the Rs 1 Crore+ mark that the rest of the Macan range commands.

In terms of design, the Macan R4 is no different from the other variants in the range; simply put the Macan looks like it is built from a single piece of metal. It has the design cues at the front that link it to the Porsche family with the familiar looking dual barrel projector headlamps with Porsche signature four-point LED DRLs, an aggressive bumper with a gaping centre grille and side intakes, deep set fog-lamps. Move to the side and the muscular flanks, highlighted wheel arches, compact glass area with blacked-out B-pillar, subtle roof-rails and large alloy wheels catch your eye.

The Macan R4 is (at least to this writer) most striking when looked from the rear quarter. The steeply raked rear windshield, the roof integrated spoiler, the large deep set tail-lamps, the bumper that juts out just below where the tailgate ends and the dual exhausts all add to the drama.

Inside, the cabin loses a bit of the simple-but-brilliant exterior theme. The lower centre console is filled with buttons to control every aspect of the Macan R4. That is not to say that cabin does not feel special.

Standard equipment on the Macan R4 includes 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xeon headlights, panoramic sunroof, Lava Black side cladding, dual single-pipe exhausts, black interior theme, Alcantara seat inserts on leather seats, eight-way electrically adjustable driver seat, three-zone automatic climate control with second-row A/C vents, sports steering wheel, cruise control, 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (dual-clutch transmission) with paddle shifts behind the steering wheel, dedicated 'SPORT' button to alter engine and transmission response, electrically foldable ORVMs, tyre pressure monitoring system, Porsche Communication Managment for easier multimedia interface control and smartphone integration, automatic rear hatch door operation etc. Porsche has a whole host of optional equipment for those who want their Macans to be unique.

Where the new Porsche Macan R4 differs the most from the other variants is its engine. While the Porsche Macan S Diesel is powered by a 3.0-litre, V6 turbo-diesel and the Porsche Macan Turbo is powered by a 3.6-litre, V6 turbo-petrol - the new Macan R4 is powered by a 2,0-litre, In-Line, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor.

The Macan R4's motor develops 252PS of maximum power between 5,000-6,800rpm and 370Nm of peak torque between 1,600-4,500rpm. Coupled to the ultra-fast 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (dual clutch) transmission and an active all-wheel drive system, the Macan R4 can accelerate from rest to 100kmph in 6.7 seconds and go on to max out at 229kmph. The Porsche Macan R4 is also fitted with Porsche Active Suspension Management system which constantly adjusts the shock absorbers and dampers according to the wishes of the driver.

Porsche claims a combined fuel efficiency of 13.5kmpl.
