The next-generation Mahindra XUV500, one of the more popular sports utility vehicles (SUVs), in the Indian automobile market, has been spotted for the first time in its BS-VI avatar. The XUV500, lately, seems to be facing the heat in its segment from the Morris Garages (MG) Hector and the Tata Harrier and Mahindra is pulling all stops to introduce the BS-VI version of the SUV.

The new Mahindra XUV500, visually, looks similar to the car’s current version. The only major difference is the green ‘BSVI-D’ sticker on the fuel cap, indicating that it’s a diesel model.

Mahindra is developing new BS-VI compliant diesel and petrol engines that are expected to haul the next-generation XUV500. The current 2.2-litre petrol motor produces 140PS maximum power and 320Nm peak torque. The 2.2-litre diesel engine, on the other hand, outputs 155PS maximum power and 360Nm peak torque. The new engines in the BS-VI XUV500 are expected to offer identical performance. Besides the 6-speed manual gearbox, some select models of the new XUV500 may have automatic transmission (AT) and all-wheel drive.

The front grille of the new XUV500 has a more upright styling but it retains the current version’s seven-slat design. That aside, the crease running through the car’s side in the current model, is also visible on the new version. The headlight units on the new XUV500 are not production-specific units and have been fitted just for the testing purpose.

The new-generation XUV500 is expected to resemble the SsangYong Korando SUV and the former may retain a number of interior features from the Korean car. The Korando has features like dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, powered tailgate, and a fully digital instrument console.

The next-generation XUV500 could be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. The SUV’s current version commands an ex-showroom price between ₹12.31 lakh to ₹18.52 lakh. Besides the Harrier and Hector, the car will lock horns with the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta.
