Next Generation Mahindra Scorpio Spotted

  • May 14, 2019

The next generation Mahindra Scorpio, the flagship sports utility vehicle (SUV) from the Mumbai headquartered company, has been spotted being tested for the first time under a heavily camouflaged avatar at Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu. The car is expected to hit the streets next year.

The new Scorpio, from the first looks, appears to be much bigger in dimension than the outgoing model. The car is expected to get additional length, breadth, and height. The wheelbase too is likely to be stretched. The 2020 Scorpio may be based on the same platform as the Marazzo (MPV) which is expected to underpin the upcoming Thar.

Notwithstanding the camouflage, the pronounced radiator grille of the 2020 Scorpio is clearly visible. The bonnet too sports a redesigned profile. The wheel arches of the new SUV appear squared like the Mahindra XUV300. The test vehicle was spotted running on steel wheels, hinting that it could be the entry-level or mid-specification model. The rear profile of the car is what catches all eyes. Italian car design firm Pininfarina, now owned by Mahindra, seems to have played a major role regarding the new SUV’s styling.

The 2020 Mahindra Scorpio, under the hood, is likely to be hauled by a new, BS-VI compliant 2.0-litre motor instead of the 2.2-litre mHawk engine in the current version. The two diesel motors produce 120PS and 140PS of maximum power respectively. The outgoing Scorpio is also available in the 2.5-litre m2DICR diesel motor which produces 75PS maximum power. The new Scorpio’s engine is likely to produce more power and torque than the higher-specification 2.2-litre unit. The motor is likely to be mated to a 6-speed manual gear system, while an automatic transmission could be expected in the all-wheel-drive model as an option. A 2.0-litre petrol motor, although not yet confirmed by the company, may be available as an option.
