Next Generation Honda City Spotted Testing

  • Jun 14, 2019

The all-new Honda City C-segment sedan, which is expected to hit the roads next year, has been spotted testing in Thailand. The Southeast Asian country is the research and development (R&D) hub of the leading Japanese automobile manufacturer. The test car, expectedly, was heavily camouflaged. The City has been one of the most popular midsized sedans in the Indian market.

Unlike its elder siblings, the Accord and Civic, the new Honda City doesn’t have a coupe-like silhouette. It rather has a more conventional three-box design. The car has Honda’s signature ‘Bull Horn’ grille, flanked by wraparound, sleeker looking LED headlamps that are seen on the Civic. The new generation Honda City, at the back, has two-piece LED tail lights like the outgoing model. The new units, however, seem slimmer in profile. The new City, overall, looks wider and longer than the current model. It’s expected to share the platform with the upcoming all-new Honda Jazz hatchback. Features likely to be retained are inside-out LED lighting, sunroof, interactive infotainment system, and the Honda Lane Watch technology.

The all-new Honda City is expected to retain the four-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol motor which produces 119PS maximum power and 145Nm peak torque. The existing four-cylinder 1.5-litre diesel engine is likely to be upgraded to meet the upcoming BS-VI emission norms set to be implemented from 1 April next year. Honda may also introduce a mild-hybrid petrol motor for its India specific version to keep up with peer competition, particularly from the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The City diesel may get a continuously variable transmission (CVT) option like the Honda Amaze.

The current model of Honda City commands an ex-showroom price between ₹9.70 lakh to ₹14.05 lakh. The all-new model is expected to command a major premium over the outgoing version. Besides the Ciaz, the new City will face competition from Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, and Toyota Yaris.
