Volkswagen has released the first official sketches of the next generation Passat executive sedan. Expected to be unveiled sometime this year, the next gen VW Passat, as the sketches suggest, will be sharper and aggressive as against the understated character of the current model.

The car adopts the brand's latest design language which first debuted in the VW Cross Coupe Concept. The new Passat's front fascia gets chrome slated grill that blends smoothly with the stylish headlamps. The secondary airdam seems to have a prominent chrome strip that runs along the width of the car.

In profile, the sedan is characterized by a tauter roofline which ends up in a steeply inclined rear windshield. The angular taillight and twin exhaust tips complete the rear fascia.

Based on the company's MQB platform, the next gen Passat is expected to be offered with numerous petrol and diesel engine options with outputs ranging from 120-180 PS. The highlight however will be the new 2.0-litre twin-turbo charged diesel engine that is good enough for 240 PS of power and 500 Nm of torque. The motor is pegged to deliver a fuel economy of about 20 kmpl under European driving cycle.

At later stage, a plug-in hybrid version would be launched with the 1.4-litre TSI petrol paired to electric motor. The combined power output is reported to be 204 PS and the car can go 50 km on pure electric mode.

We expect the next iteration of the executive sedan to make its first public appearance at the Paris Motor Show in October. VW India has previously expressed that it's keen on bringing the new Passat to our shores.
