New SsangYong Korando Could Preview Next-Gen Mahindra XUV500

  • Feb 01, 2019

When homegrown Mahindra launched the XUV500, it made a dent in the mid-sized SUV segment, garnering instant success. With the help of its South Korean subsidiary, SsangYong, they have started to jointly develop SUVs and engines. One example of this is the XUV300, which is in essence a cut down version of the SsangYong Tivoli. The front and rear profiles have been redesigned to differentiate it from the Tivoli. Going by this trait, we can expect the new XUV500 to share its platform and design elements with the upcoming SsangYong Korando.

With the Geneva Motor Show right around the corner next month, SsangYong is all set to reveal the fourth generation 2020 Korando. Both the XUV500 and Korando are mid-sized SUVs and hence the Korando should give us a sneak peek into the 2020 XUV500. Both vehicles are expected to share a common platform. What is of interest is that this platform is based on a stretched version of the one found on the Tivoli. This translates to the fact that the new XUV500 will be derived from a stretched version of the XUV300 platform. Essentially this will end up being the only unibody platform for Mahindra. Two ladder-frame platforms will also remain in existence, one found in the Marazzo and the other in the Alturas G4. The strategic tie up with Ford will mean that it will also share the platform with the American auto giant.

If the XUV300 and Tivoli are anything to go by, the second generation XUV500 could get styling inspired by the Korando. The two companies are already in the process of jointly developing turbo petrol engines, which is likely to make an appearance in the new XUV500. A smaller 1.2L engine surfaced when the XUV300 was launched.

The mid-sized SUV market is getting crowded fast and the new XUV500 will have to up the ante if it wants to be competitive. The newly launched Tata Harrier and soon to be launched MG Hector are set to spoil the party for the new XUV500 when it launches.
