New Hard Top Mahindra Thar Spotted Testing

  • May 27, 2019

Indian indigenous automobile manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra has been testing the next generation Thar. A softtop model of the car was recently spotted being tested which revealed the vehicle’s interior. And now a hardtop version of the Thar was spotted during its test run.

The current Mahindra Thar is available with an optional hardtop version. Mahindra is expected to tow the same line with the upcoming model. However, the Mumbai-headquartered company may offer the hardtop version as an assembly line output, this time which will make the car a better all-weather vehicle.

The new Thar is expected to be hauled by a new diesel motor which complies with the upcoming BS-VI auto emission norms. The vehicle may come with the 2.0-litre diesel engine which may replace the 2.2-litre mHawk unit in the XUV500 and the Scorpio. Mahindra, expectedly, has not revealed the powertrain and the mechanicals, but the engine is likely to produce 140PS maximum power and 320Nm peak torque and will be mated to a 6-speed manual gear system instead of the 5-speed unit in the outgoing version. The company may retain the four-wheel drive system along with a low-range gearbox to lend the car a hardcore off-roader feel.

The upcoming Mahindra Thar will be better equipped in terms of safety and comfort. It has been designed to suit urban riding conditions better than the outgoing model. The hardtop version will expectedly be more expensive than the soft top. The current Thar hardtop version is priced around ₹1.32 lakh more than the soft top. Besides the mandatory safety apparatus like the antilock braking system (ABS) and the electronic brake force distribution system (EBD), the new Thar will have parking sensors and driver airbag.

The new Thar is likely to be unveiled at the 2020 New Delhi Auto Expo. It’s expected to command an ex-showroom price of ₹9.49 lakh.
