New Ford SUV To Rival Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster

  • May 17, 2019

American automobile major Ford has been present in the Indian sports utility vehicle (SUV) market with the EcoSport and Endeavour. The compact EcoSport SUV has been one of the bestselling cars in Ford’s portfolio. The company has now taken up plans to launch three new SUVs by 2022, two of which will be in collaboration with Mahindra & Mahindra. The first car from the Ford-Mahindra partnership will debut in 2020. The second vehicle, which has been codenamed BX745, will be introduced in 2022 in the compact SUV segment and will rival the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster.

The BX745 is expected to be hauled by a Mahindra-sourced, 1.5-litre diesel motor which produces 122PS maximum power and 300Nm torque. It’s the same engine which powers the Mahindra Marazzo multipurpose vehicle (MPV). The BX745 is also likely to be available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine by the time the new BS-VI emission norms are implemented next year.

The compact BX745 is expected to be built on the same platform as the Ssangyong Tivoli. Mahindra has modified the X100 platform of the Tivoli to use in the XUV300 in India. The XUV300 offers great handling and the same may be experienced in the BX745.

The Ford BX745 may get an EcoSport badge when it is launched. The compact EcoSport SUV has forged much traction in the Indian market and the sub-4m SUV segment has been one of the fastest growing segments. Besides, retaining the EcoSport branding will help the company to take on peer competition, better since every car company is jumping on to the sub-4m SUV bandwagon. The BX745 is expected to be introduced in other emerging markets like China and Brazil.

The new Ford compact SUV will also compete with several upcoming sub-4m compact SUVs that include the Kia SP2i, the 2020 Volkswagen T-Cross, and the new Skoda Kamiq-based car.
