Audi has introduced a petrol variant of the recently launched A6 facelift in India. At the time of the launch, the new A6 was only offered in a single diesel variant- Matrix 35 TDI. Audi, however, seems to have quickly realised the need of a petrol powertrain in the new A6, and thus has introduced the same into the new model, only a month after it was being launched here. Priced at Rs. 45.90 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi and Mumbai, the petrol version of the new A6 comes badged as 35 TFSI.

Although smaller than the outgoing 2.0-litre petrol engine, the 1.8-litre TFSI unit on the new A6 is claimed to be 12.7 per cent more efficient and 5 per cent more powerful. The 1,798cc petrol engine delivers 190PS of maximum power between 4,200-6,200rpm along with 320Nm of peak torque served up at 1,400-4,100rpm. The engine comes mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic (dual-clutch) automatic gearbox sending power to front wheels. The Audi A6 35 TFSI boasts a fuel economy of 15.26km/l.

On the aesthetic front and equipment wise, the A6 35 TFSI is no different than its diesel sibling, except for a few minor changes/updates. Unlike the diesel variant, the petrol version seems to have missed out on Matrix LED headlamps and comes fitted with regular LED headlights instead; the high-end Bose Surround System is also missing from the features list and so is a reversing camera. That said, these features are available as optional extras for customers willing to shell some more cash. On the up side, the 35 TFSI comes with an additional fuel saving auto Start/Stop system with ‘Energy Recovery’, which isn’t found in the diesel version.

Commenting on the launch, Joe King, Head, Audi India, said: “Embodying our philosophy of ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’, and following the recent successful introduction of the new Audi A6 Matrix, the new Audi A6 35 TFSI takes our success in the executive sedan segment a notch higher. The new 1.8 L turbocharged engine which is 200cc smaller than the outgoing engine offers a unique combination of power and also efficiency at the same time. With the new 1.8 L TFSI engine, the fuel efficiency of the Audi A6 35 TFSI is increased by 12.7 percent and the power is further increased by 5 percent.”

The Audi A6 primarily competes against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-Series in India. The competition among the German trio in this segment can be best described as fierce since each of the models is one among the best-sellers for their respective maker in India. The Audi A6’s revised styling and improved powertrain clubbed with latest features and equipment on the inside and out makes it a compelling prospect for luxury car buyers. Adding more powerful and ‘quattro’ equipped AWD versions to the A6 line-up will also help broaden the appeal of the car among buyers here. Lets hope Audi does that in the coming time.
