Porsche has launched the 718 Cayman and the 718 Boxster at Rs 81.63 lakh and Rs 85.53 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively. The mid-engine rear-wheel drive philosophy is at the core of the 718s, which makes the car a lot of fun despite its displacement and power figures.

Compared to the previous generation of Boxster and Cayman, the new batch has lost 1.5-litre of displacement and two cylinders but picked up a turbocharger along the way. This has helped them squeeze out 300PS of power at 6500rpm and 380Nm of torque from 1950rpm to 4500rpm out of the tiny 2.0-litre flat four engine. That's 35PS and 100Nm more than the older Boxster. Thanks to the lower displacement, the fuel efficiency figures are excellent. Porsche claims a mileage of 11.1kmpl for the city and 17.5kmpl for the highway.

With the available 7-speed PDK gearbox, the cars can go from nought to 100kmph in 4.7 seconds if you opt for the Sports Chrono package. Without it, it'll take 4.9 seconds to touch the triple digit mark.

As is the case with Porsches, features you'd expect at that price need to be bought separately. The list of optional kit includes a dual zone climate control, satellite navigation, LED headlights, power adjustable seats, keyless entry, push-button start, a decent 6-speaker music system, a 10-speaker 500 watt Bose music system and a 12-speaker 820 watt Burmester audio setup.

718's direct rival, the Mercedes-AMG SLC 43, offers a lot of convenience features as standard. It also comes with a bigger 3.0-litre V6, which produces 367PS of power and 520Nm of torque. The close ratio 9-speed gearbox in the Mercedes can rocket it to 100kmph in 4.7 seconds without requiring you to shell out for the "sport package". The SLC 43 carries a sticker price of Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
