MG Unveils Hector Ahead Of June Launch

  • May 15, 2019

British carmaker Morris Garages (MG) has unveiled the Hector sports utility vehicle (SUV) in India, ahead of its launch next month. The five-passenger car is 4,655mm long, 1,835mm wide, and 1,760mm in height, and is one of the largest vehicles among its peers. It also has one of the longest in-class wheelbases which leads to a more roomy cabin. MG has already begun the car’s production at its Halol workshop.

The Hector has a number of segment-first features. It has a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with integrated e-SIM and internet technology. The e-SIM enables owners to remotely control the car’s AC, panoramic sunroof, and door locking using the iSMART app. A 7-inch multi-information display is integrated into the instrument cluster.

The MG Hector SUV will be hauled by a 2.0-litre diesel motor which produces 170PS maximum power and 350Nm peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission system. It’s the same motor which powers the Jeep Compass. MG is also offering a turbocharged, 1.5-litre petrol motor with a 48V mild-hybrid system which produces 143PS maximum power and 250Nm peak torque.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch technology.

The Hector has a subtle use of chrome on the body and the colour of the plastic cladding blends with the exterior shade. The car gets projector headlamps with fog lamps underneath. Both the headlights are conjoined by a plastic bar. The massive plastic cladding at the back adds to the car’s proportions to forge a bigger look. The five-seat car offers 587 litres of cargo space. MG has plans to introduce a seven-seat version of the Hector later.

The MG Hector SUV is expected to command an ex-showroom price of INR15 lakh. It will rival the Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier, and the Mahindra XUV500 and other upcoming SUVs in its segment.
