  • May 03, 2019

Morris Garages (MG) Motor India is all set to unveil the Hector sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the country on 15 May and will officially launch the car later in June. MG, meanwhile, has revealed some mechanical details about the car.

The MG Hector will be hauled by a 2.0-litre, Fiat-sourced, multijet diesel motor. It’s the same engine that hauls the Jeep Compass. The Hector petrol version will be powered by a turbocharged, 1.5-litre motor with optional 48V mild-hybrid technology, a first in the segment. MG hasn’t disclosed the power output and the transmission numbers for the two engines.

The Hector, previewed by Baojun 530, has sleek LED headlights that flank the chrome embellished grille. The Hector’s fascia has a faux, brushed-aluminium skid plate on both the rear and front bumpers. The car also gets diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the rear has a set of distinctive LED tail lamps.

The dashboard of the Hector has a 10.4-inch infotainment display with a number of connectivity features. MG has joined hands with Microsoft, Cisco, and SAP to provide real-time traffic updates and navigation, along with the car’s health status and diagnostics. The customised operating system of the infotainment console will get over the air (OTA) updates and emergency response. The console also comes with AccuWeather and live music streaming. That aside, the interior of the car has a panoramic sunroof, premium upholstery, a 360-degree camera, star-stop button, and several other features. MG will begin its India operations with 50 dealerships along with 120 touchpoints. The production of the SUV has already commenced at the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation’s plant at Halol.

The MG Hector will be a 5-seat car and is likely to command a price of INR15-20 lakh. The SUV will face competition from the Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and the Mahindra XUV500.
