MG Compact SUV Spied Testing In India

  • Feb 21, 2019

The mid-size SUV from the fleet of MG Motor India has been spotted testing on roads. Covered with camouflage, the test mule reminds of the Baojun 510 compact SUV. Recently, MG Motor has opened its showroom in Gurugram and is all set to launch its first product in the Indian market, the mid-size SUV Hector sometime in the second quarter of this year.

It is known that the company is testing the left-hand-drive version of the new SUV, based on the 510, and if all goes well, we are likely to see its launch sometime in 2020. This will be MG’s third introduction in the Indian market. Currently, we are curious about the other two confirmed launches from the portfolio of the automaker, which are the Hector and an all-electric SUV, both to be launched this year.

In the International market, the 510 is available with a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, mated to a manual gearbox and AMT with paddle shifters. We’ll have to wait to see if the company offers the mid-size SUV with the same powertrain option in India as well. As far as dimensions are concerned, the 510 measures 4,220mm in length which is similar to its prime rival Creta (4,270mm). On the design front, we expect it to be similar if not identical with its sibling Hector.

Likely to be positioned below the Hector, the new mid-size SUV from MG Motor is expected to borrow the majority of the features from the former. Some notable ones include an 8-inch LCD infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, power adjustable ORVMs, and cruise control. While the upcoming Hector features a digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and a big touchscreen infotainment system.

The new Indian-spec SUV will compete against the likes of the Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, and the Kia SP-based SUV.
