  • May 11, 2014

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it is working on building a new GL-Class for the year 2017 when it is expected to go on sale. The GL Class has been on sale for 35 years now and is need of an update to make it an even better offering the market. In India the G-Class has received good response resulting in satisfactory sales for the German luxury car maker.

Proposed changes to the new Mercedes G Class is to improve its stability on-road and off-road. The new front suspension should aid this move and the extra width will add to the spaciousness of the cabin area. It will provide greater interior space which will easily allow Merc to incorporate newer seats which are broader with better technology as well. The width will be extended to 1860 mm (an increase of around 100mm in width).

W463 is the codename for the G-Class and the German car marque is making use of aluminium to lighten their favourite SUV. It is expected to shed upto 200 kgs of weight and will be around 2370 kgs or lower from its weight of 2570 kgs. Merc is careful about not ruining its heritage with this redesign of the G-Class and therefore it will be retaining many elements of its design such as the exterior looks of the car to some extent. 2013 was the best year for Mercedes-Benz G-Class in its 35 year history and Merc wants to give back more to its customers with the updates to the G-Class in 2017.

The design inspiration for the new G Class will also come from the Ener-G-Force design concept showcased at the 2012 Los Angeles Motor Show and as per a report in the Auto Car India magazine, the front end will look similar and the overall design will be angular as seen in the current gen-G Class.

Interior features will be upgraded without a doubt and there will be many futuristic technologies will be employed. It is likely to feature LED technology for lighting and several driver assistance systems will be introduced while the existing safety systems in the car will be upgraded. Comfort is given priority as well and some bits from the C-Class is expected to makes its way into one of the most capable off-roaders in the market today.

New engines that will make debut on the 2016 E-Class will make their way into the new G-Class, one of them will be the new 3.0 litre, in-line six cylinder petrol engine which is expected to produce around 360 Bhp of power and a Diesel motor with over 300 Bhp on tap is expected to come to the new G-Class. All variants to get a 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox as standard equipment to improve the fuel efficiency to even greater numbers. The new G-Class will also come with AMG variants but this is likely to be revealed after the launch of the standard variants.
