Mercedes-AMG has launched its second new product in India, the SLC 43 and it's priced at Rs 77.5 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The performance division of Mercedes-Benz had launched the GLE 450 earlier this year . The SLC 43 is the AMG-tuned version of the SLC hard-top convertible; the latter was launched internationally in March 2016.

The SLC replaces the SLK-Class in international markets - 'SL' denotes roadsters/hardtop convertibles and 'C' tells us that it belongs to the C-Class sedan family. The Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 replaces the Mercedes-AMG SLK 55, and will be brought to the country as a completely-built-unit (CBU).

The SLC 43 is new and old at the same time. The exterior design has more of the company's new softer design theme and the bullish looks of the SLK 55 are gone. The interior design is similar to the old car but there is a new flat-bottom steering and a new interior trim and together, they should make it feel special.

The new SLC 43 is vastly different as compared to the SLK 55. A 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged, V6 motor replaces the 5.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, V8 monster. The SLC 43 gets a fast-shifting, 9-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the 7-speed automatic offered on the SLK 55. It delivers all the power to the rear wheels.

Speaking of power, it's down at 367PS compared to the SLK's 421PS. Torque too is down by 20Nm and is now at 520Nm. But the SLC 43's light weight compensates by dispatching triple digit speeds in 4.7 seconds, which is only 0.2 seconds slower. The biggest advantage of the changes is how the SLC 43 handles; gone is the front heavy, slightly roll-happy characteristic of the older car, this is thanks to a 90kg reduction in weight.

The Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 also gets an adjustable suspension and adjustable ride modes, which can transform it from a very fast convertible to a nimble yet angry beast, which doesn't mind being thrown into corners. The SLC 43 is also very economical (12.8kmpl!) and emits much lesser pollutants. The hard-top roof can be deployed or stowed away at speeds of up to 40kmph at the press of a button. Competition for the SLC 43 will include Jaguar F-Type V6 S Convertible, Porsche Boxster range and BMW Z4.
