Maruti Suzuki WagonR Premium Version Spotted

  • Sep 18, 2019

Indo-Japanese automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki recently introduced its premium multipurpose vehicle (MPV) XL6 in the Indian market. The car is based on the top-level version of the Ertiga MPV and includes a number of upgrades. The company, similarly, seems to be working on a premium version of its popular WagonR hatchback. The car is likely to be branded as the XL5 and sold through the company’s Nexa dealership chain. The premium WagonR was recently spotted being tested, albeit under heavy camouflage.

The exterior of the new WagonR is expected to have chrome strips and appliqués on the body to distinguish the car from its regular version. Pictures of the vehicle have already revealed LED tail lamps. The XL5, in all probability, will have projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) to add to the premium look and feel.

The premium version of the WagonR is expected to be hauled by a 1.2-litre BS-VI motor which debuted in the car’s latest version. The engine outputs 83PS maximum power and 113Nm peak torque. It’s a more potent powertrain than the older 1.0-litre petrol unit which produced 68PS maximum power and 96Nm peak torque. The latter engine is still offered in most of Maruti’s smaller cars. The premium WagonR may come with an optional automated manual transmission (AMT) just like the XL6.

The XL5 may have an all-black cabin like the Baleno and XL6, to lend a more sporty appeal to the car. Automatic headlamps and climate control could also come as standard features. Both are missing in the WagonR standard version.

The existing version of the WagonR commands an ex-showroom price between ₹4.39 lakh to ₹5.96 lakh. The price of the XL5 will definitely include a premium. Maruti currently sells the Ignis, Ciaz, XL6, Baleno, and the S-Cross through the Nexa dealership.
