Maruti Suzuki To Launch Vitara Brezza Petrol Soon

  • Jul 08, 2019

Indo-Japanese carmaker Maruti Suzuki has announced that it won’t make any diesel vehicles once the BS-VI emission norms are implemented from 1 April 2020. Introduction of petrol engines in Maruti Suzuki cars that only had diesel motors until now was on the anvil and the Vitara Brezza seem to be the first car in this regard.

The Vitara Brezza petrol model is likely to be rolled out next month. The car could be powered by the 1.2-litre twinjet, the 1.0-litre turbojet, or the 1.5-litre standard motor. The three engines haul the 2019 Baleno, the Baleno RS, and the Ertiga and Ciaz respectively.

The 1.2-litre twinjet unit is already BS-VI compliant. It outputs 90PS maximum power and 113Nm peak torque. The engine is mated to the mild-hybrid system in the new Baleno and is paired with a 5-speed manual gear system. The three-cylinder, 1.0-litre Baleno RS engine produces 102PS maximum power and 150 Nm peak torque. The motor is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission but doesn’t conform to the BS-VI norms.

The 1.5-litre engine that hauls the Ertiga and Ciaz, outputs 105PS power and 138Nm peak torque. The gear options include a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual. This engine, however, is likely to attract higher taxation and make the Brezza more expensive.

The 1.2-litre BS-VI motor seems to be the best option for Brezza petrol. It offers better fuel efficiency in terms of sub-4m cars. That aside, it will keep the Brezza in competition with other 1.2-litre cars like the Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, and the Tata Nexon, in terms of performance. The latter two, however, uses a turbocharged version of the 1.2-litre motor.

The 1.2-litre motor will help Maruti to keep the Brezza reasonably priced. The car is expected to be more affordable than the current diesel version. Besides the XUV300, Venue, and Nexon, the Brezza petrol will rival the Ford EcoSport as well.
