Maruti Suzuki Launches Ertiga 1.5-Litre Diesel Version

  • May 01, 2019

India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki, just days after announcing that it will stop making diesel vehicles from April 2020, has launched the 1.5-litre diesel version of the Ertiga multipurpose vehicle (MPV). The in-house developed, DDiS 225 engine comes in the VDI, ZDI, and the ZDI+ variants. The price for the basic trim is INR9.86 lakh, while the highest ZDI+ model is pegged at INR11.20 lakh. The 1.3-litre, Fiat-sourced DDiS 200 engine debuted in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and will now be offered in the Ertiga, alongside the new engine.

The new four-cylinder, turbocharged 1,498cc diesel engine produces maximum 94bhp at 4,000rpm and 22Nm peak torque at 1,500-2,500rpm. The DDiS 225 naming comes from the maximum torque that the engine offers. The dual-mass flywheel linkage between the motor and the gear system helps to channel the torque evenly, adding to more refined handling. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission system. An optional automatic transmission is not being offered as of now.

The Maruti Ertiga is the highest selling MPV in India. The car commands a 39 percent market share in its segment.

Maruti introduced the second generation Ertiga in November 2018. The car has sold more than 30,000 units since it hit the streets, translating to a growth of 150 percent during the November-April period.

Maruti, while disclosing its last quarter financial results recently, announced that all its diesel cars will be phased out by early next year when the new BS-VI emission norms are implemented. The company took the decision because of the high cost involved in making the existing diesel engines BS-VI compliant. Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava, however, said that the 1.5-litre diesel motor may find a place in bigger models only if there’s market demand. The 1.5-litre DDiS engine may be fitted to the S-Cross, one of the bigger cars in Maruti’s portfolio, which is yet to get the new motor.
