Maruti Suzuki Dzire Gets BS-VI Engine, Price Hiked

  • Jun 25, 2019

Maruti Suzuki, the biggest car manufacturer in India by volume, has announced the launch of the BS-VI Dzire compact sedan. The company had earlier stated that all its cars powered by the 1.2-litre K12B naturally aspirated petrol motor will be upgraded to meet the BS-VI emission standard which is set to be implemented from 1 April next year.

Upgrading to the BS-VI standard will have no effect on the output of the Dzire’s engine. The car is fitted with a 1.2-litre motor which produces 113Nm peak torque and 83PS maximum power. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gear system while the 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) is available as an option. The fuel efficiency claimed by Maruti will drop to 21.21kmpl from the 22kmpl in the new version. The price of the BS-VI Dzire has also gone up by ₹15,000.

The Dzire’s 1.3-litre diesel version will remain unchanged and the engine won’t be upgraded to the BS-VI standard. Maruti has already announced that it won’t roll out any diesel cars after April 2020. However, the price of the Dzire diesel model has also gone up because the car now includes improved standard safety measures.

The safety features in the new Maruti-Suzuki Dzire will include antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), dual airbags, driver and co-driver seatbelt reminder, speed alert system, and reverse parking sensors. The rest of the standard features are expected to remain the same.

Maruti-Suzuki is among the first automobile manufacturers to launch cars with BS-VI engines much ahead of the official deadline. The Dzire will be the fourth car in the company’s portfolio to offer a BS-VI engine after the WagonR 1.2, Swift, and the facelift Baleno hatchback. That aside, both the diesel and petrol models of the Dzire have been upgraded to meet the AIS-145 safety standard.
