Maruti Suzuki Alto Tops Segment In August Sales

  • Sep 25, 2019

The entry-level hatchback segment of the Indian automobile market currently has only three models. The Maruti Suzuki Alto has always dominated the segment and continued to top sales charts in August.

Here’s how the three cars fared in the month under review.

Maruti Suzuki Alto: The small hatchback from the Indo-Japanese carmaker witnessed a 12.55 percent month-on-month (MoM) drop in sales. The Alto sold 11,577 units in July, while the number stood at 10,123 in August. The Alto enjoys a 77.48 percent market share and is one of the most affordable cars available in India. The car’s sales in August, however, were far below its six-month average of 18,508 units.

Renault Kwid: The leading French automobile manufacturer has a 16.76 percent market share in the compact hatchback segment. The Kwid sold 2,191 units in August, an 18.36 percent drop in sales from July. The Kwid’s sales have more than halved considering its six-month average of 4,737 units.

Datsun redi-GO: The redi-GO has always been an underperformer in the segment and its sales have been poor. The redi-GO, however, was the only car which witnessed a rise in sales in August. The car sold 751 units in the month under review, compared to 649 in July, a growth of nearly 16 percent. But its sales still remained far below the six-month average of 985 units. The market share of redi-GO has also witnessed a jump to 5.74 percent from 5.01 percent.

Maruti Suzuki, meanwhile, is all set to introduce the S-Presso compact hatchback on 30 September. The car will lock horns with Renault Kwid in its class. The S-Presso is expected to command an ex-showroom price of ₹4 lakh and is likely to share the Heartect-A platform with the WagonR and Ignis. The car will be sold through Maruti’s Arena dealership chain.
