Maruti Suzuki's SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system has been around for a few years now. But, the company only launched it with Apple CarPlay for iPhone connectivity at first. Android users had MirrorLink to project their compatible phones' displays on the screen. The company is now rolling out an update to these cars that will add Google's in-car entertainment interface. The newer cars, such as the Ignis, new Dzire and the S-Cross facelift already come with the feature straight from the factory.

The software update will cover the top variants of the Ertiga, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza and Baleno along with the top two variants of the older S-Cross. You can either schedule a visit to get the update early or just get it done along with routine service. However, Maruti Suzuki states that the free update will be available until March 31, 2018. It's unclear at the moment if the carmaker intends to make it chargeable from April 1, 2018, or just take it off the table altogether.

Carmakers have struggled for decades to provide an intuitive and familiar interface for their infotainment systems but failed to hit the sweet spot. The ability to bring your digital world to the car's dashboard along with the natural smartphone experience rids them of this problem and allows them to focus on other aspects of the vehicle. Meanwhile, Google and Apple can do what they do best on the software front.
