Maruti Discontinues Gypsy, No Plans For Suzuki Jimny Yet

The Maruti Gypsy, one of the most iconic cars to be seen in India in the eighties and nineties, has been officially discontinued. The Gypsy, introduced in India in December 1985, was produced for more than three decades, courtesy the demand from armed forces and off-road enthusiasts. The car received a number of aesthetic and mechanical updates during that time. The India-specific Gypsy was a stretched, second generation version of the global Suzuki Jimny. Maruti has decided not to update the Gypsy to meet the BS-VI emission norm which is set to be implemented soon.

The Indian Army recently switched over to the Tata GS800, based on the Safari, as its official vehicle.

The Maruti Gypsy came in a naturally-aspirated, 1.3-litre petrol motor which produced 81PS maximum power and 103Nm peak torque. The engine was mated to a 5-speed manual transmission system. The car was available in either the soft-top guise or the hardtop. The Gypsy didn’t have much safety features and was pretty basic. It never had airbags or antilock braking system (ABS) in its more than three decades long existence. The car had an ex-showroom price of INR6.22-6.40 lakh.

The fourth-generation, global-specification Suzuki Jimny was launched in 2018. Maruti, however, is unlikely to introduce the car in India anytime soon. It’s a two-door vehicle which is not particularly popular in India. Maruti, having discontinued the Gypsy, doesn’t have a four-wheel-drive car in its India portfolio now. It has two crossover SUVs—the S-Cross and the sub-four metre Vitara Brezza—available for customers.

Maruti is likely to continue producing the Gypsy only for the Kenyan market. Suzuki recently entered into a partnership with Toyota to share certain models for export to African countries. More Suzuki cars, manufactured in India, are likely to be spotted in Africa within the next few years.
