Mahindra To Pull The Plug On KUV100 Diesel

  • Jun 10, 2019

Leading automobile manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra has reportedly decided to pull the plug on the KUV100 NXT diesel soon, in the wake of the BZ-VI emission standards which is set to be implemented from 1 April next year.

The KUV100 NXT is the smallest car in Mahindra’s portfolio. The 3-cylinder, 1.2-litre, mFalcon diesel motor output 79PS maximum power and 190Nm peak torque when it was first introduced in the KUV100.

Upgrading the diesel motor to conform to BS-VI norms would lead to a major price hike of the car. According to industry reports, it will be difficult for Mahindra to offset the increased production cost, courtesy the limited sales of the KUV100.

The Mumbai-headquartered company, however, has not confirmed when the KUV100 diesel will be withdrawn. The compact hatchback will be available only in the 1.2-litre G80 petrol motor which produces 82PS maximum power and 115Nm peak torque. The 3-cylinder engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gear system. Mahindra managing director, Pawan Goenka, has informed the media that naturally aspirated motors will go out of production because of the more stringent emission norms. The KUV100 may be hauled by the KUV300’s 3-cylinder, 1.2-litre turbocharged MPFI engine in the near future.

Mahindra will roll out BS-VI compliant petrol cars beginning from October 2019. The XUV300 will be the first car in the series. The Mahindra KUV100 may see a price hike of around ₹25,000. The petrol version of the KUV100 currently commands an entry-level ex-showroom price of ₹4.69 lakh.

Mahindra, for some time now, has been silent regarding the KUV100’s electric model which was showcased at the 2018 New Delhi Auto Expo. The vehicle is known as the eKUV and could be introduced in the next few months. The withdrawal of the e20 Plus has created a void in Manindra’s electric vehicle portfolio.
