Mahindra Launches Thar 700 As A Swansong For The Sturdy SUV

  • Jun 18, 2019

Leading Indian carmaker Mahindra & Mahindra has launched the Thar 700 as a swansong for the series. Mahindra has decided to stop production of the Thar which has been widely acknowledged as one of the sturdiest sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in India. The Thar 700 is a limited edition car and only 700 units of the vehicle have been manufactured. The SUV commands an ex-showroom price of ₹9.99 lakh.

The new Thar will be hauled by the 2.5-litre diesel motor retained from the car’s CRDe version. The engine produces 105PS of maximum power and 247Nm of peak torque. It will be mated to a 5-speed manual gear system, while all-wheel drive will be standard.

Most of the features in Thar 700 have been retained from the vehicle’s existing version. The new Mahindra SUV has front cup holders, manual AC vents, windshield demister, a 12V outlet, and a lockable glove compartment. The car has antilock braking system (ABS) as standard.

The Mahindra Thar 700 will be available in the Aqua Marine and Napoli Black colour schemes. The former colour is also seen on the Mahindra Marazzo. It also has 15-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels that were earlier seen on the Marksmen and Scorpio. The front bumper has a silver finish and black decals on the bonnet lid to indicate that it’s a limited edition vehicle.

The seats have leatherette covers. The Thar 700 has a special signature badge on its right fender. It bears the signature of Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra.

The Thar 700, however, won’t have passenger seatbelt reminder, rear parking sensors, and driver airbag since the car will go out of production before the 1 July 2019 government deadline to implement the safety features.Mahindra, meanwhile, is already working on the next generation Thar which is expected to be unveiled at the 2020 New Delhi Auto Expo.
