Maruti Suzuki has launched the Ciaz S at a starting price of Rs 9.39 lakh for the petrol version and Rs 11.55 lakh for the diesel variant. The S variant is priced at premium of about Rs 11,000 when compared to the top-of-the-line Alpha variant and is only available with the manual transmission. For the additional sum, you get:

  • Front and rear bumper extensions

  • Side skirts

  • Rear boot lid spoiler with integrated stop light

  • Black dashboard and interior

  • Black leather upholstery

The black dashboard and interior does not only look nice, but is also easier to maintain compared to the beige panels and seats. The additional kit is similar to that seen on the the limited edition Ciaz RS, which was discontinued when the sedan was shifted from Maruti Suzuki showrooms to the premium Nexa dealership network.

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is available with a 1.4-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel engine. The petrol motor makes 93PS of power at 6000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm. The diesel mill churns out 90PS at 4000rpm and 200Nm at 1750rpm. Both the engines come paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, while the petrol is also available with a 4-speed torque converter. The fuel efficiency rating of the petrol motor stands at 20.7kmpl for the manual variants and 19.1kmpl for the automatic. The diesel-powered sedan delivers an exceptional figure of 28.1kmpl in test conditions thanks to the addition of a mild hybrid system.

Massive tax breaks for the diesel trim in the pre-GST era gave the Ciaz diesel an upper hand against its competition. With the rollout of a uniform tax structure, the sedan has been stripped of the benefits, which resulted in a price hike of up to Rs 1.87 lakh for the diesel trims. At the same time, petrol variants witnessed a modest cost correction ranging between Rs 6,500 and Rs 10,000.

With the playing field levelled, we're now excited to see what Maruti pulls out of its bag of tricks to tackle the Honda City and the upcoming Hyundai Verna. The new Maruti Ciaz S option could give it a fighting chance in the face of stiff competition. The Ciaz is currently priced between Rs 7.66 lakh and Rs 11.44 lakh for the Sigma petrol and Alpha diesel variants, respectively.
