  • Dec 05, 2017

The new petrol engine comes with only the 6-speed automatic transmission

Mahindra has launched the XUV500 with a 2.2-litre petrol engine, and the 6-speed automatic transmission is the only option. The XUV500 with the new petrol engine is only available in G variant and costs Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The petrol engine appears to employ the same 2179cc block as the diesel engine and make similar power and torque as well. The power output stands at 140PS (same as the diesel engine), and the torque is rated at 320Nm (10Nm less than the diesel engine). Mahindra hasn't cleared if the XUV500's petrol engine has a turbocharger or not. Generally, turbocharged petrol engines tend to have higher torque figure than the power figure. Also, the power output is surprisingly low for a turbocharged petrol engine displacing 2179cc. The Jeep Compass with its 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine makes 163PS of power and 250Nm of torque. The new engine's fuel efficiency figure is also under wraps. Considering the displacement, we are expecting it to be in high single digits or low double digits at best.

Features of this G variant include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, automatic headlamps, automatic wipers, cruise control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, 8-way power adjustable seats, climate control, keyless entry and push-button start. Exterior features include projector headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels and puddle lamps with logo projection.

The Mahindra XUV500 petrol variant competes with the Jeep Compass. The fully-loaded Limited (O) variant of the Jeep Compass with the automatic transmission costs Rs 19.67 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The Compass' manual transmission is available only in the base Sport variant and priced at Rs 15.16 lakh.
