The 2017 Verna gets a 6-speed AT with the existing 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines

2017 Hyundai Verna

Hyundai has finally pulled the wraps off the new-gen Verna for India, and prices for the sedan now start from Rs 8.0 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Verna doesn’t get the 1.4-litre engines from the last generation car, but the 1.6-litre engines are carried forward. The most affordable 1.6-litre Verna (S variant with the petrol engine) was previously available at Rs 8.81 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

While the engines are carried forward, they’ve been tinkered. The petrol engine is down on the torque rating by 4Nm and the max torque kicks in higher too. For the diesel though, the max torque of 260Nm is now available from 1500rpm to 3000rpm, which means it's available lower in the rev range and stays put for longer too. We believe this should improve the diesel engine’s driveability, especially at slower speeds. The petrol engine is rated at 17.7kmpl for the manual transmission and 15.9kmpl with the automatic transmission. The diesel engine promises a fuel efficiency of 24.7kmpl and 21kmpl with manual and automatic transmissions, respectively.

Here’s a comparison between the engine output of the previous and new Verna.

While the engines are carried forward, the platform on which the new Hyundai Verna is built is different. It’s a new platform dubbed as K2 and offers more rigidity. Hyundai claims that it makes the new Verna safer too.

The Verna may not have seen an increase in engine power output, but the car is certainly bigger than before. The wheelbase, at 2600rpm, is 30mm longer, and the Verna is also 29mm wider and 65mm longer overall.

The new Verna is available with four variants to choose from – E, EX, SX and SX(O). The automatic transmission is available in EX variant for both petrol and diesel Verna. The diesel Verna can also be had with the auto transmission in SX+ variant, while the top variant with automatic transmission is available with the petrol engine only.

As is the norm these days, every new car brings in something new to the features table. The Verna too offers a couple of first-in-segment features in the form of ventilated front seats and standard trip meter controls on the steering wheel. The top variant is also equipped with touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, sunroof, six airbags and a rear sun shade. The standard list of safety features includes ABS and dual airbags.
