Kia Starts Trial Production Of SP2i, To Be Launched In September

  • Mar 29, 2019

The trial production of the upcoming sub-compact SUV from the fleet of Kia Motors, codenamed the SP2i has begun. Expected to be launched in September this year, the Kia SP2i is the first ever offering by the automaker in India. It will be manufactured at the plant situated in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Kia has revealed that it will be bringing a total of 5 models by 2021 in the country. While the second model will be launched six months after the launch of the SP2i, the third will enter the market after another six months.

Recently, the South Korean automaker showcased the production-version of the sub-compact SUV, which was called the SP Signature Concept at the 2019 Seoul Motor Show. The model resembled the SP concept that was revealed in 2018. However, some of the production parts have been added and a few unpractical ones have been dumped, including the DRL positioned on the roof of the concept.

In the recent past, Kia has also opened its first-ever showroom in the country. Situated in Noida, the showroom has been built on the brand’s globally popular ‘Red Cube’ design lines. It is a one-of-its-kind facility designed and aimed to cater to sales and after-sales services. It has been built across 12,000 sq. ft. constituting a lounge and cafe, consulting bays and an exclusive delivery area. The automaker has plans to inaugurate a few more showrooms in the country before the launch of the Kia SP2i.

Currently, the Kia Stinger GT and the Kia Rio are on display there. While the Stinger GT is a sports sedan rivaling the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Volvo S90, the Rio, on the other hand, is a premium hatchback that rivals the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20 in the Indian market.
