Jeep Working On 7-Seat SUV For India

  • Jul 04, 2019

Leading US carmaker Jeep is reportedly working on a 7-seat sports utility vehicle (SUV) to be launched exclusively in the Indian market. Jeep, back in 2018, had disclosed that its product plans up to 2022 includes several new models to bolster the company’s presence in the Indian SUV market. One of these models, Jeep said, would be a 7-seat vehicle.

The new vehicle is expected to be smaller than the Grand Cherokee but bigger in dimensions when compared to the Wrangler and Compass. The company currently has no vehicle in the 7-seat segment. While it does have the Grand Commander, the vehicle was launched only in China as a premium 7-seat SUV.

The new Jeep 7-seat SUV may be offered in both diesel and petrol motors. The car is likely to be hauled by the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel motor which produces 350Nm peak torque and 170PS maximum power. It’s the same engine which powers the Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. The unit could be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission (AT) or a 6-speed manual gear system.

The petrol engine of the new Jeep SUV could be a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit mated to a 9-speed AT. It’s the same motor which hauls the Grand Commander, albeit in a different tuning, producing 234-275PS maximum power. The engine could be mated to a 6-speed manual gear system to keep the vehicle’s price competitive for the Indian market.

Jeep has not revealed any launch date of the new car. However, the car is likely to be positioned in the low-D SUV segment and may not debut in India before early 2022. It will be introduced only after the launch of the Compass facelift version.

The Jeep 7-seat SUV, expected to command an ex-showroom price of around ₹30 lakh, will be a true off-roader. It will be a direct rival of the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner and would be an indirect competitor of the Honda CR-V and the Skoda Kodiaq.
