Two models of the JLR family, the 2013 Jaguar XF and the 2012-2014 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque have caught the eye of federal investigators for a possible threat of involuntary roll away. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation to examine the potential threat of roll away. NHTSA claims that they have received several complaints of such unwanted motion while four of those have lead to minor injuries to people.

The specified cars have been reported to exhibit "unintended motion" with their rotary style shifter dials. Several reports claim that these cars have a tendency to roll over even after rotating the knob to the P position. Because of the design principles, it's not possible to decipher the selected gear position while the car is turned off.

A similar issue has been keeping Fiat Chrysler's legal department busy since the summer of 2016. Last year, Star Trek actor, Anton Yelchin, was pinned against the gate by his own Jeep Grand Cherokee. On the slope, the car rolled away and gathered enough momentum to wallop Anton and kill him.

The Jeep was not possessed by a demon; it just wasn't slotted correctly into the 'P' or parking mode. The lever in the SUV is designed to return to its position after selecting the mode. So, it's hard to tell whether it's in P or D mode just by looking at it. You have to glance in the dash to see what is selected on the shifter.

The American giant, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, was looked at with suspicious eyes by the feds for the issue. FCA is still under investigation by the federal agencies. According to NHTSA, they had received 25 complaints of crashes, of which, nine resulted in injuries.

While manufacturers are calling it an act of carelessness, the authorities are pointing at the potential "design flaw", which is leading to injuries and death.
