The second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been previewed through official sketches ahead of its world premier at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new Volkswagen Tiguan will reportedly be offered in three iterations- 5-seater crossover, 5-seater coupe and the 7-seater crossover (long wheelbase). The latter is expected to be launched in India by end-2016.

Following its global unveil at the motor show, the 5-seater version of the new Tiguan will go on sale in major international markets by the end of 2015. The 7-seater version is due for 2016 and it will have a stretched wheelbase as compared to the 5-seater’s wheelbase of close to 2600mm. The 5-seater coupe derivative is planned for 2017.

Although revealed in sketches, the new Tiguan’s design takes inspiration from the Cross Coupé GTE concept that was revealed at the 2015 Detroit motor show earlier in 2015. Underpinning the new Tiguan will be Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform that replaces the previous model’s PQ35-platform. The new Tiguan is claimed to be 80 kilograms lighter than the outgoing model, albeit it will be wider, longer and more spacious than before.

Volkswagen will be offering the new SUV with a choice of four-cylinder turbocharged engines in diesel and petrol variants. The petrol versions will come powered by either a 1.4-litre or a 2.0-litre unit, while the diesel versions will have a 1.6-litre and a 2.0-litre engine on offer. A plug-in hybrid will also be made available in a new ‘GTE’ version that will use an electric motor in conjunction with a 1.4-litre petrol engine. Power transmission duties will be carried out by a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

For the Indian market, Volkswagen is going to assemble the vehicle locally so as to keep the prices in check. Expect the new Tiguan to be offered with the 2.0-litre diesel unit initially. Prices for the new Tiguan should hover around Rs 25 lakh- Rs 28 lakh mark in India, meaning it will compete against rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota Fortuner, upcoming Chevrolet Trailblazer etc.
