Hyundai Verna, Elantra And Creta To Ride On Kia Seltos Engine

  • Jul 12, 2019

Leading Korean carmaker Hyundai will be using the 1.5-litre BS-VI compliant diesel and petrol engines borrowed from the Kia Seltos in its upcoming versions of the Creta, Verna, and Elantra. Hyundai, unlike Maruti Suzuki, will continue selling diesel cars even in the BS-VI regime which sets in from 1 April next year.

The four-cylinder 1.5-litre Kia Seltos diesel motor produces 115PS maximum power and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT) system. Both the Hyundai Creta and Verna are currently powered by 1.6-litre and 1.4-litre diesel motors that output 128PS/260Nm and 90PS/220Nm respectively. The 1.6-litre diesel engine also hauls the Elantra.

However, in the BS-VI era, the Smartstream 1.5-litre diesel motor of the Seltos will replace the 1.6-litre unit of the Creta, Elantra, and Verna. The 1.4-litre diesel motor is likely to be discontinued.

The 1.6-litre petrol motor of the Verna and Creta will be replaced by the new Smartstream 1.5-litre engine which produces 115PS maximum power.

The engine will be paired with a 6-speed MT with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) system available as an option. The 1.4-litre petrol motor of the Verna, which was introduced to keep the car’s price competitive, will be discontinued.

The new motors in the Hyundai Creta are likely to be introduced in the next generation models of the car, expected to hit the streets in March 2020. Both the Verna and Elantra, on the other hand, are due for a midlife upgrade and the new engines are expected to be introduced in the cars at that time. The facelift version of the Hyundai Elantra could be launched later this year while the upgraded Verna may be showcased just before the BS-VI norm is implemented.

The Creta, Elantra, and Verna currently command an ex-showroom price of ₹9.6 lakh, ₹13.82 lakh, and ₹8.09 lakh respectively.
