Korean automobile major Hyundai launched the Kona electric car in India today at an introductory price of ₹25.30 lakh. The car will be available in Polar White, Phantom Black, Typhoon Silver, and Marina Blue monotone colour schemes. The Phantom Black and Polar White versions will have a dual-tone roof paint scheme.

The Kona gets a synchronous, permanent-magnet electric motor which is powered by a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery. The motor produces 136PS maximum power and 395Nm peak torque. Hyundai claims that the car makes 0-100kmph in 9.7 seconds. The car has Eco, Eco+, Comfort, and Sport driving modes and returns a mileage of 452km on a single charge.

The Kona electric vehicle has an intaglio front grille with an integrated charging port. The split-type headlamp has LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and the headlights. The back has LED taillights and skid plates. The electric car gets roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, and aero-tuned flared fenders. A separate configuration houses the turn indicators, reverse lamps, and the slim brake lights.

The Kona’s cabin has a 17.77cm touchscreen infotainment system which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, and a multifunction steering wheel. Other features include smartphone wireless charging, automatic AC, a 10-way power driver seat, an electric sunroof, front ventilated leather seats, and push-button smart key function.

Hyundai claims that the Kona can be charged 80 percent in 57 minutes with a fast DC charger in a CCS Type II socket, while the 7.2kWh level-II charger will take 6.10 hours. Hyundai will provide two chargers with the vehicle that can be plugged into a normal 15amp, three-pin socket. The company is reportedly working with Indian Oil Corporation to install fast-charging infrastructure at Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi.

The Kona is the first long-range electric car to be introduced in India which currently has no direct rival. The Morris Garages (MG) eZS is expected to be launched later this year.
