Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has launched automatic transmission variant of the Elite i20 hatchback priced at Rs 9.01 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The automatic Elite i20 is powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission whereas the manual Elite i20 gets a 1.2-litre unit. Developing 100PS of max power, the 1.4-litre engine is more powerful than the 1.2-litre, 83PS engine on the manual Elite i20.

The automatic Elite i20 will be available in ‘Magna’ trim only, devoid of the upmarket features on the Sportz and Asta trims. Standard equipment on the Elite i20 automatic include driver and passenger airbags, central locking, headlamp escort function, keyless entry, 2-DIN music system with steering mounted controls, front and rear power windows, rear AC vents and electrically adjustable ORVMs.

1.4-Litre Petrol Engine With A 4-Speed Automatic Is Rumoured To Be Launching Soon

The ‘Magna’ trim on the Elite i20 manual transmission is priced at Rs 6.18 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). There is a difference of nearly Rs 3 lakh between the similarly loaded manual and automatic trims, primarily due to a more powerful engine and the 4-speed torque converter. Even the fully-loaded manual Asta (O) trim of the Elite i20 is about Rs 1.25 lakh cheaper than the automatic Elite i20!

Amongst petrol powered automatic hatchbacks, the Elite i20 competes with Maruti Suzuki Baleno CVT, Honda Jazz CVT and Volkswagen Polo GT TSI. VW Polo GT TSI gets a 1.2-litre, 105PS petrol engine mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission. Honda Jazz gets a CVT transmission mated to the 1.2-litre, 90PS engine. Baleno CVT is the least powerful car in the segment powered by a 1.2-litre, 85PS engine. In terms of affordability, the Baleno automatic is the easiest to own with the prices starting from Rs 6.96 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) followed by Honda Jazz CVT.

Hyundai Elite i20 Gets 6 Airbags

Besides launching the automatic Elite i20 in the market, Hyundai has updated the top-of-the-line Asta (O) trim of the Elite i20 and SX trim of the i20 Active. The respective trims now get 6 airbags, speed sensing auto door lock and height adjustable front seat belts in addition to the existing safety features.
Considering factors like equipment, technology and price, the Elite i20 falls short of its competitors in the segment that either topple it on affordability or on technology.
