Hyundai Kona Electric Waiting Period Extends To 4 Months

  • Aug 07, 2019

The waiting period of Hyundai Kona, the first long-range electric car in India, has extended to four months in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai. The Kona Electric got more than 120 bookings within 10 days of its launch. However, only 17 units have since been delivered to customers. This has led to a longer waiting period for the vehicle. Among the major Indian cities, Chandigarh has the shortest waiting period of 45 days. The car has been brought to India through the completely knocked down (CKD) kit route.

The Kona recently witnessed a price drop, courtesy the government lowering the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates on electric vehicles from 12 to 15 percent. The Kona Electric currently commands an ex-showroom price of ₹23.72 lakh in Delhi. The vehicle is available across 11 cities in India through 15 dealerships. Only Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have two showrooms each selling the Kona. The waiting period for the car is two to three months in Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi.

Globally, the Kona Electric is available in either with a 39kWh or a 64kWh battery back, powering a 100kW and 150kW motor respectively. The maximum power output of the two motors is 136PS and 204PS respectively. The Indian version of the car, however, is available with a 39.2kWh battery which is mated to a 100PS maximum power output motor, producing 395Nm peak torque.

Hyundai claims that the car can sprint from 0-199kmph in 9.7 seconds. The Automotive Research Association of India has pegged the Kona Electric’s mileage at 452km on a single full recharge. The battery takes six hours to recharge with a 7.2kW wall box charger which comes with the car. Select Indian Oil Corporation dealerships will install a50kW fast DC charging units that can recharge the battery up to 80 percent in an hour.
