Leading South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai has introduced a 1.6-litre diesel engine in the entry-level E+ and EX models of the Creta midsized sports utility vehicle (SUV) at an ex-showroom price of ₹10.88 lakh and ₹11.92 lakh respectively. The prices of both models include a ₹90,000 premium over their corresponding models equipped with the 1.4-litre motor. Following the version reshuffle in the Creta series, the starting price of the car with the 1.6-litre motor has dropped by around ₹2.74 lakh. The 1.6-litre unit was earlier available in the higher level SX trim and upwards.

The 1.6-litre diesel motor produces 128bhp and 260Nm peak torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual gear system. The output is much higher than the 1.4-litre unit which produced 90bhp and 220Nm peak torque. The car is also available with a 1.6-litre petrol engine.

The equipment in the E+ and EX models remains unchanged. The E+ continues to have remote locking, halogen headlamps, manual air conditioning, front armrest, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, power windows, and tilt-adjustable steering. The EX model includes all the features of the E+ trim along with LED daytime running lights (DRLs), adjustable rear headrests, a rear armrest, rear parking camera, a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and steering-mounted controls.

With its reduced price, the E+ and EX models miss out on a number of features available on the SX trim. These include 17-inch alloy wheels, sunroof, projector headlamps, cruise control, automatic climate control, keyless entry, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. The Creta’s safety equipment which comprise rear parking sensors, dual airbags, antilock braking system (ABS), seatbelt reminder and speed alert system, remain standard across all models.

The Hyundai Creta continues to lock horns with the Morris Garages (MG) Hector, Kia Seltos, Renault Captur, Nissan Kicks, and Tata Harrier in the midsized SUV segment.
